Biography

Stephen Young serves as the School-Based Mental Health & Wellness Coordinator for the Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE). In this role, he provides coordination, leadership, and oversight of mental health and wellness services across multiple school districts and sites.

A Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Doctoral Candidate in Educational Leadership at California State University, Sacramento, Stephen brings more than 20 years of experience across education, mental health, non-profit, and youth development settings. Before joining SCOE, he served as a School Social Worker and leader in Elk Grove Unified School District’s Student and Family Empowerment Office, where he supported unaccompanied and homeless youth under the McKinney-Vento Act. He has also provided clinical services in higher education and private practice settings, specializing in trauma-informed, culturally affirming therapy for youth and men of color.

Stephen’s professional journey includes roles as a Dean of Students, program director, and community leader dedicated to advancing equity, access, and belonging. His work is guided by a commitment to restorative practices, anti-oppressive frameworks, and the belief that wellness and education are inseparable in fostering thriving communities.

Outside of his professional life, Stephen enjoys gardening, golfing, and spending time with his family and friends. He is a proud husband and father of two teenagers, as well as their pet pug.
