Phase 1: First 6 Weeks of School
Phase Overview
Phase 1 focuses on Clinicians navigating the school campus/site in the first 6 weeks of school. Tasks/activities prioritize integrating into the school culture, understanding their role within the school team, and assessing the school's interdisciplinary meeting structure. Clinicians will implement COST principles, establish a universal referral process, and work towards achieving 10 billable encounters weekly. Ongoing support via weekly supervision or monthly consultation will also be established in this phase.
Phase Goals/Objections
Begin integration into school culture and develop school relationships
Develop understanding of role in specific school team
Assessment of schools interdisciplinary meeting structure
Implementation/integration of COST principles into school site process
Establish school site referral process
Register first clients achieved from universal referral process
Achieve 10 billable encounters weekly
Meet supervision requirements according to licensing status
Establish Presence on Campus and Develop School Relationships
Schedule meeting with principal and coordinator within first 2 weeks of school
Meet with principal, vice principal, clinician(s), and Clinician II’s on school site
Engage in five 1:1 interactions per week
Connect with a partnering clinician within your district or within proximity for shadowing opportunities (for new clinicians)
Attends and introduce your role during back to school night
Attend and introduce your role to site support team
Attend and introduce your role at school staff meeting
Create Venn Diagram to provide clarity on role at school site
Review SCOE Overview for Sites PowerPoint that Coordinator will review at school staff meeting
Identify the frequency that best fits the school site to communicate weekly schedule via email with coordinator included in communication
Meet with family navigator to discuss support and site needs
Familiarize Yourself With School Navigation
Obtain school keys/access items from school point person or coordinator
Understand room/space and campus access/check-in process
Retrieve parking information for school campus
Review school schedule and calendar, sharing calendar with supervisor and other applicable staff
Address discrepancies between school calendar and SCOE calendar with Coordinator, and develop work plan for calendar conflicts
Gain Clarity on Current School Site Processes
Inquire about mental health direct services available
Inquire about “call out process” (passes, phone calls, go to classroom)
Inquire about Attendance
Inquire about existing referral process and how referrals are tracked
Inquire about school crisis procedure/point person
Establish a Universal Referral Process
Explore school’s current referral processes (if established)
Review list of referrals
Establish Universal Referral Process
Implement a COST Structure
Inquire about current COST structure.
Assess if/how school site holds interdisciplinary meetings currently (COST/MTSS/PBIS)
If school holds interdisciplinary team meetings already:
Identify with Coordinator how COST structure/principles can be integrated into existing meetings including a referral pathway to receive referrals
Collaborate with coordinator to ensure school staff understands the care team's role in participation in the meetings
Implement COST
Hold a site-based orientation where the clinician introduces COST

Renew consents, ROI, and assessments by utilizing the referral tracker

Engage in Supervision or Consultation
For Associate Clinicians seeking licensure through the Board of Behavioral Sciences:
Collaborate with your assigned clinical supervisor (Clinician II) to begin BBS paperwork
Maintain weekly BBS logs
Attend weekly group supervision
For fully licensed clinicians:
Attend clinical consultation once per month (consultation offered twice per month)
